In India, there has been continuous work done at the government level for health medicine. At the government level, AIIMS is the largest hospital in India. The first AIIMS was founded by Jawaharlal Nehru in New Delhi. Later, in view of the increasing congestion at AIIMS in New Delhi, it was decided by the Central Government to open AIIMS Hospital in other states as well.
Under this, the central government has approved the establishment of a total of 22 AIIMS. In the year 2020, AIIMS hospitals are located at the following locations –

- AIIMS Raipur (Chhattisgarh)
- AIIMS Patna (Bihar)
- AIIMS Jodhpur (Rajasthan)
- AIIMS Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
- AIIMS Rishikesh (Uttrakhand)
- AIIMS Bhubaneswar (Odisha)
- AIIMS Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh)
- AIIMS Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh)
- AIIMS Nagpur (Maharashtra)
- AIIMS Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh)
- AIIMS Kalyani (West Bengal)
- AIIMS Bathinda (Punjab)
Treatment in AIIMS hospitals is not absolutely free, although people from the very poor are treated for free. But treatment at AIIMS is much cheaper than other private hospitals. ICU and ventilator facilities are provided in all AIIMS hospitals. Testing and medicines are also provided free of charge at AIIMS.
