Famous officers who resigned from IAS and IPS Service.

In India, most graduate boys and girls have a dream to clear the tough UPSC exam and become an IAS or IPS officer to make their name shine and serve the country as well. Every year around 800 candidates are able to qualify the tough UPSC exam, out of which around 100 candidates are selected for IAS and 100 candidates for IPS. But sometimes such a situation arises when some IAS and IPS officers prefer to leave such a prestigious job and resign from their post. The special thing is that such officers leave the job without taking VRS due to which they are not able to avail the benefits of retirement. The resignation of officers who have passed the UPSC is accepted only by the President of India, because after passing the UPSC, the appointment letter is issued to the candidates by the President only.
Although in India people do not want to leave even a Group D job in a government department, but there are some courageous people who resign from prestigious jobs like IAS, IPS and other class 1 services obtained through UPSC and start doing some other work. Here is a list of such famous IAS and IPS officers who resigned from their posts and started working in other fields.

  • Mr. Yashwant Sinha (Ex. IAS, 1960 Batch) – When he was holding the post of Joint Secretary to Government of India in the Ministry of Surface Transport in 1984, he resigned from his job and joined Janata Party. After that he also served as a minister in the Vajpayee government at the Centre.
  • Mr. Arvind Kejriwal (Ex. IRS, 1995 Batch) – Kejriwal resigned from his IRS job as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in 2006 and started social work. In 2012, he formed the Aam Aadmi Party and became the Chief Minister of Delhi in 2013, and is still the Chief Minister of Delhi state till date.
  • Dr. Ajoy Kumar (Ex IPS, 1986 Batch) – He resigned from his IPS service in 2010 and joined politics and joined the Congress party and became the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha MP in 2011. Presently also he is a senior leader of the Congress party.
  • Mrs. Kamya Mishra (IPS, 2019 Batch) – While serving as Darbhanga Rural SP, he resigned from his job in 2024. However, her resignation is still pending.
  • Mr. Shivdeep Lande (Ex IPS, 2006 Batch) – He resigned from his job as Inspector General of Police of Purnia in 2024.
  • Mrs. Alankrita Singh (Ex IPS, 2008 Batch) – While holding the post of SP Women and Child Protection Organization, she went to London in 2021 without permission and then did not return to duty. In January 2025, she sent her resignation which has been accepted by the state government.
